India’s leather industry is actively enhancing its workforce through various skill development initiatives to improve productivity and meet global standards.
Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC): Established in 2012, LSSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the demand for a skilled workforce in the leather industry. It collaborates with industry stakeholders to develop training programs, certifications, and content development for various job roles.
Skill Certification Assessment for Leather Employees (SCALE) App: Launched in October 2020, the SCALE app is a comprehensive platform for skilling, learning, assessment, and employment needs within the leather sector. It integrates quality assurance across training delivery, monitoring, assessments, and linkages to the Aatmanirbhar Skilled Employee-Employer Mapping (ASEEM) portal.
Common Facility and Skilling Centres: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), and LSSC, is setting up Common Facility and Skilling Centres across India, including Chennai. These centers aim to provide training and support to artisans and professionals in the leather sector.
Entrepreneurship-cum-Skill Development Programs: The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) has conducted skill development programs in Kanpur, Kolkata, and Jalandhar. These programs focus on entrepreneurship development, skill enhancement, and providing insights into India’s foreign trade policies.
These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its leather industry by equipping its workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in a competitive global market.
