Tata International to Double Sustainable Leather Production by 2027

Tata International, the global trading and distribution arm of the Tata Group, has announced plans to increase its sustainable leather production to 50% of total output within the next four years, up from the current 27%. This initiative is part of the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the leather industry.

Launch of Phoenix Leather: Under its Earthcare® Leather range, Tata International has introduced Phoenix Leather, an eco-friendly product developed through a patented collaboration with the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai. This advancement represents a significant step forward in sustainable leather technology.

Recovery in Key Markets: Post-pandemic, Tata International is witnessing a promising recovery with increased interest from major markets such as the USA, China, and Europe. This resurgence is expected to bolster the company’s sustainable leather initiatives.

The Earthcare® Leather range, including Phoenix Leather, is produced at Tata International’s facility in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, which employs over 750 workers. This facility underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing practices and local employment.

The patented “GENOCORIUM” process in creating Phoenix Leather transforms trim waste from leather production into high-quality reconstituted leather sheets. This innovative technology repurposes corium waste and significantly reduces water pollution, depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional leather manufacturing.
